Traditionally known as the sport of the sheiks, camel racing is big news in Qatar. Though professional camel racing only began in 1972, the sport has a much longer history. During race season, thousands of camels from Qatar and further afield compete to win various valuable prizes, such as gold and silver daggers or swords. The race distance varies depending on the tournaments, however, most professional races run for 6, 8 or 10km. The competition is fast and furious, with camels capable of running at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Camel Racing at Al-Shahaniya

From November to February, camel racing at the Al-Shahaniya racing track, an hour’s drive north of Doha, is in full swing. Domestic and international tournaments are held every Friday, but visitors are also free to come and watch the camels train from 9:30 am on other days of the week. From the fiercely competitive to traditional races to the modern robot camel jockey races, this is a must-see event for all visitors in Doha.

There is shaded seating available in the grandstand, though some visitors prefer to do as the locals do and follow the race by driving along the road that runs parallel to the 10km course. Make a day of your trip and squeeze in a visit to the nearby virtual camel city and the camel stables.

The track is situated off the main Duhkan-Doha road approximately one hour’s drive from downtown Doha. After passing the Al Rayyan football stadium, take the first exit at the roundabout. When you reach the sign for Oryx, turn left – you will see a sign for the camel races.
