If you thought that a marathon was the ultimate test of endurance, think again. For passionate runners aiming to smash an even higher goal, ultra-trails (anything longer than 42.2km) offer an extra level of burn. This type of event often throws in more extreme physical challenges in addition to running, requiring extra determination and focus from participants.

While Koh Chang may be known for its beaches, 70% of the island’s mountainous terrain is blanketed by sumptuous emerald forest. Combine the island’s challenging terrain with the scenic backdrop it provides, and you’ve got the perfect ingredients for an ultra-marathon.

Ultra-Trail Koh Chang

With a stunning course that winds through fishing villages, jungle hiking trails, and sandy beaches, Ultra-Trail Koh Chang offers a test of stamina to rival some of the toughest endurance tests in the world. Thousands of participants travel from all corners of the globe to take part in the event, which takes place in February each year.

As well as the sense of reward that comes with beating a punishing ultra-trail course, many participants are drawn to Ultra-Trail Koh Chang as an opportunity to uncover hidden nooks and crannies of the island, far from hustle and bustle of the tourist beat. There is a variety of courses for those who want to enjoy the hidden treasures of the island, rather than putting themselves through such a gruelling physical endeavour. There are five courses in total, encompassing 5km, 14km, 34km, 70km and the infamous Jungle 100km.

Getting to the start line

The race starts and finishes at Wat Salak Petch School in the south of the island. The ultra-tail is a big event on the island, so it’s usually easy to find a songtaew that will take you there directly. The Jungle 100km course has a start time of 4am, so many people that take part stay at the camp ground at Wat Salak Petch School before the race begins.
