Shopping in Central Bangkok

CentralWorld, Central Embassy, Central Chidlom

One of South East Asia’s largest shopping destination, CentralWorld has over 500 stores, 100 restaurants, 15 cinemas, a jewellery and watch zone, and the most extensive food retailer in Thailand, and is where you can buy anything from the best in brand name shopping through to affordable gifts and home décor from all over Asia.

Central Childlom Department Store is one of Bangkok’s most established shopping addresses, located at the doorstep of Chidlom BTS station, and offering beauty products, fashions, home décor, and fine foods. Central Embassy is the latest addition to the lifestyle and shopping scene, directly connected to Central Chidlom and presenting an array of dining options and luxury brands.

The Erawan Shrine

Set at Ratchaprasong intersection, across from CentralWorld, the Erawan Shrine is an embodiment of Bangkok contrasts, where centuries’ old Thai dance and music traditions are enacted amongst swirls of incense smoke against the modern city backdrop. The shrine itself was originally built to ward off evil, and is usually packed with worshippers.

The Grand Palace

Formerly the residence of the Kings of Thailand, the Grand Palace is an enormous complex surrounded by a white crenellated wall and containing classic Siamese architecture designed for auspicious occasions such as coronations and receptions. Housed within the complex is Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, containing the nation’s most revered image of Buddha. Audio guides are available at a supplement charge.

Be reminded to dress appropriately, wearing long trousers and with your shoulders covered

Wat Pho

Directly adjacent to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha is a must-see, with its 46-metre long, 15-metre high Reclining Buddha. The temple compound contains fascinating statuary, and the temple is also considered one of the leading schools of massage in the country.

Wat Arun

A short walk across the road from Wat Pho is Tha Tien Pier, with cross-river ferries to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Sitting majestically on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun represents Mount Meru, the centre of the world in Buddhist cosmology. Spectacular sunsets with the temple spires forming a silhouette can be seen from the east side of the river.

Jim Thomson House

Famed for reviving the Thai silk industry after World War II, Jim Thomson was an avid collector of Asian arts. His home consists of six traditional Thai-style houses and now houses a museum. The Jim Thomson House is located two kilometres from the hotel.

Lumpini Park

One of Bangkok’s green lungs, Lumpini Park is an oasis of greenery and serenity in the city and a prime destination for outdoor activities such as cycling, roller blading, jogging, yoga and tai chi. The largest public park in the capital houses a lake, and the shaded trees make it perfect for a relaxing break away from the attractions of Bangkok. Lumpini Park is less than two kilometres away from the hotel.
