Songkran, or Thai Water Festival, is widely regarded as the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. This festive celebration takes place every year in April from the 13th to the 15th. During these three special days off, Thai people will make their way to their hometowns to pour water on the hands of their elders and receive blessings in return as they believe that this will bring luck and happiness to their lives. 

How do people celebrate Songkran in Bangkok

Songkran festival is the spectacular time that both Thais and foreigners will come out to splash water on each other and have fun on the streets amid the tropical April summer heat. If you are planning to celebrate Songkran in Bangkok, there are five most popular places to enjoy this water celebration including Siam Square, Central World, Silom, RCA and Khao San Road. You can easily get to all of these destinations by BTS, MRT or Taxi.

Apart from splashing water, you are also encouraged to observe the traditional side of Songkran day with a temple visit. In Bangkok, you can visit some famous sacred temples in one day such as Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Rakhang, Wat Arun and Wat Pho etc. to make merit and secure good luck for the upcoming year.
