Ao Nang's night market gets most of the attention from visitors staying along the beach and it earns it. However, drive twenty minutes inland to Krabi Town on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening and you will find a different kind of market altogether, one that draws a genuinely local crowd alongside the visitors, set against the backdrop of Krabi's riverfront rather than a beach road.
This is Walking Street, known locally as Thanon Khon Dern and it is worth the short trip out of Ao Nang if you want an evening that feels a little more like Krabi Town's own than a resort strip's version of one.
What makes it different
Walking Street runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from around 5pm to 10pm, spread across Soi Maharaj 8 and the plaza behind the Vogue department store in the centre of town, close to the riverfront. It is been running since 2013 and in that time it is become the town's most established weekend market, roughly 50 stalls deep, covering everything from handmade jewellery and local artwork to clothing, handicrafts and no shortage of street food.
What sets it apart from a purely tourist-facing market is the crowd itself. Locals genuinely turn up here on weekends, not just to sell but to eat, browse and watch the evening's live performances from the stage at the market's centre, where local singers and musicians run through sets most nights the market's open. It is a market built for lingering rather than rushing through, with a central seating area specifically designed for buying food from one stall and sitting down to eat it while the evening's show plays out.
What to look for
The food stalls are the heart of the market and the variety runs wide: spring rolls, pad Thai, grilled skewers and a rotating cast of Thai desserts, alongside the kind of stalls you would not always find at a beachfront market, more handmade jewellery, local artwork and small-batch goods from Krabi-based makers rather than mass-produced souvenirs. Bargaining is expected and welcomed, as it is at most Thai markets, though prices here tend to be reasonable to begin with given the local footfall keeping vendors honest.
The market behind the market
If you want to see where Krabi Town's own daily shopping actually happens, Walking Street isn't quite it, that title belongs to Maharaj Market, the town's wholesale morning market that runs from around 4am until midday, supplying much of the fresh produce, seafood, and spices used by local restaurants and hotel kitchens across the region. It is a working market rather than an evening event, worth a visit for early risers curious about where Krabi's food actually starts, while Walking Street remains the place locals go to relax, eat out and enjoy a weekend evening rather than do their weekly shop.
Getting there and making an evening of it
Krabi Town sits close enough to Ao Nang that a weekend trip in for the market is an easy addition to a longer stay and combines naturally with a stroll along the riverfront near Chao Fah Pier beforehand, where Krabi's giant crab statue, something of a local landmark, makes for an easy photo stop before the market crowds pick up.
For families staying at Centara Anda Dhevi Resort & Spa Krabi, the resort's proximity to Krabi Town makes this an easy weekend evening out, arranged through the resort's tour desk if transport is needed, without disrupting the rest of a beach-based itinerary. It pairs well as a change of pace from Ao Nang's more tourist-oriented evenings, particularly for families wanting a taste of local weekend life alongside their time on the sand.
Walking Street is not a hidden secret, and it does not pretend to be. However, unlike markets built almost entirely around visiting travellers, this one has kept its local following intact, which is exactly what makes an evening there feel less like a tourist stop and more like a genuine slice of how Krabi spends its weekends.
