Celebrating the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan

Experience the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan

The full moon party on Koh Phangan, Thailand, is mythical in its worldwide fame and has become almost a rite of passage for millions of young travellers since it first was held on Haad Rin Beach back in 1983.

History of the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party

The exact reason for the party has long been disputed. Many people believed it was held to thank a group of 20-30 travellers for staying at a particular resort along the beach. However, with its reputation as a party destination growing month by month, any reasons for the celebrations soon faded in importance. It became enough just to be there and have the photos to prove it.

Will the parties be banned?

There has been talk by the local government about banning the celebrations to attract more discerning tourists. It’s unclear how much longer the parties will be permitted to continue. Interestingly, many official tourism pages about Koh Phangan provide limited information about the full moon parties. This may add to the allure of the parties as people may want to experience them before they end.

Boost to the Local Economy

The party is held every month on the night of the full moon, lasts all night, and ends the next morning. The full moon party is a major source of income for many of the restaurants, shops, and resorts on the island, and the economic impact of a permanent cancellation would leave a large monthly hole in the local economy.

What to expect at the Full Moon Party

Attendees are encouraged to stay mindful of their belongings and surroundings to make the most of the experience.

The mood during the parties is joyous and fun, and various clubs and bars along Haad Rin Beach have trance, house, drum and bass, reggae, and dance music playing nonstop.

Our Full Moon Party Tips:

  • Party with friends whenever possible, and stay hydrated.
  • Wear shoes or sneakers on the beach.
  • Try some Thai street food, enjoy classic party drinks from the bars, and support the local economy.
